THE STRAIGHT TALK SUPPORT GROUP & RESOURCE CENTER TRANSITIONAL HOUSE
The Straight Talk Support Group & Resource Center Transitional House – 1101 N. Mangum Street, Durham, NC 27701-1931
Straight Talk’s Transitional House for men reentering society is the heart of the organization. STSG supports those formerly incarcerated by helping them secure housing and employment; helping them connect with appropriate treatment programs; and helping them resist negative influences. The house has room to house 18 men. A typical stay at the house is about 90 days but it could extend to 6 months depending on funding. The transitional housing has furnished living spaces and common areas, such as: living room, kitchen area, dining area, and laundry room, as well as a basketball court for the residents to use as they please. STSG works with the Formerly Incarcerated Transition Program (FIT), and Samaritan Health to offer our residents health services. STSG is connected with Wrangler Jeans in Greensboro, that provides different articles of clothing in different sizes so when the residents arrive, they can have clothes. Straight Talk provides educational programs teaching life skills, such as: mental health, finances, HIV/AIDS education, computer skills, resume building, substance abuse, anger management, etc. STSG aims to assist residents in reconnecting with family and offers mediation. STSG also organizes social activities for the residents to get out of the house together and enjoy some fun activities together. A newly implemented policy is that each resident gets a Peer Support Specialist upon entry to the transitional house. We aim to reduce recidivism rates among the people we work with. We want people to get out of prison and stay out! If you have any questions or want to know more about our transitional house, do not hesitate to reach out.
